PHASE 1: SKILLS ASSESSMENT - 2 DAYS COMPLETED This is the starting point of APP First Officer! This comprehensive 2 day assessment is conducted in a specially dedicated "Skills Assessment Centre" and is designed to assess candidate's suitability for a career in aviation. Whilst nerve racking, it is actually an enjoyable 2 days, and a prime opportunity to look around the site and get a feel for the place! You can also take part in "extra curricular activities" such as sitting in on a Ground School lesson, touring the accommodation or, if you're lucky, sit in on the OAA Boeing 737-400 simulator!
The order in which candidates do the assessment can vary, but a typical Skills Assessment will include the following: Day One:

PHASE 2: ATPL GROUND TRAINING - 27 WEEKS (26 January - 14th August) COMPLETED ATPL Ground Training is conducted at Oxford Aviation Academy's main base – Kidlington Airport. Phase 1 takes 15 weeks: 12 teaching weeks, 1 week of study leave and 2 weeks of exams. Phase 2 takes 12 weeks: 8 teaching weeks, 1 week study leave and 2 exam weeks. In total we will sit 42 exams: 28 internal and 14 Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) exams. As passing them with an average of at least 85% is a pre-requisite for attending Phase 3 in Goodyear, the pressure is on! They also have a large say in our employablilty with airlines.

PHASE 3: FOUNDATION FLIGHT TRAINING - 20 WEEKS (24 August - 10 January) NOT COMPLETED Foundation Flight Training takes place at Phoenix Goodyear Airport in Arizona. With nearly 365 days of sunshine a year, this is the ideal place for us to learn the fundamentals of aircraft operation without any unnecessary weather delays. Only a short distance away from Phoenix and Scottsdale, and a few hours drive from Las Vegas (or an 8 hour drive to San Francisco/ Los Angeles if we're feeling adventurous!), our 20 weeks in Arizona promises not to disappoint! During this time, we will complete 110 hours in the single engine Piper PA28 Warrior, 10 hours in the FNPT II simulator and 10 hours in the multi-engine Piper Seneca PA34, before taking our Multi-Engine Commercial Pilots License Skills Test towards the end of the 5 months. At the end of this phase, we will hold a 'Multi-engine Commercial Pilots license.'
PHASE 4: FIRST OFFICER FUNDAMENTALS (FOF) TRAINING - 1 WEEK (18 January - 22nd January) NOT COMPLETED First Officer Fundanmentals, unique to APP First Officer, is a short, but very effective and useful part of training. During this week, we will learn how to operate effictively in a multi-crew modern airliner environment. Issues such as Crew Resourse Management will be addressed, as well as working on effective communication skills and interview preperation. We will also be involved in delivering presentations to recently started courses and recieving them from current pilots/airline executives on the current sate of the industry and the modern working environment. Completion of this phase leads to the issue of 'wings' - meaning we are now qualified to fly an aeroplane to a professional standard.
![]() PHASE 5: ADVANCED FLIGHT TRAINING - 12 WEEKS (25 January - 18th April) NOT COMPLETED On returning to Oxford, with our CPL pass result, we will be focussing mainly on Instrument Flying using the Piper Seneca PA34 out of Oxford Kidlington Airport. Flying in poor weather and in highly controlled airspace with airliner traffic, this is considered to be the most challenging part of the course. This phase will come to a close with our Instrument Rating Skills Test – the most challenging test in any pilots career! In this test, the cockpit windows are blocked with screens, obstucting the students view of the outside world. It consists of a planned IFR flight to another airfield before returning to Oxford. Along the way, we can expect some harsh contitions (including simulated engine failures!) and all has to be completed to a very high degree of accuracy to pass.

PHASE 6: JET TRAINING: Multi-Crew & Jet Operations Course - 3 WEEKS (19 April - 7th May) NOT COMPLETED The last 3 weeks of the course make use of the Boeing 737-44 simulators at Kidlington Airport. This allows us to concentrate on Multi-Crew Co-operation and Jet Operations. After completing 36 hours in the simulator, we will move on to airline interviews and (hopefully) airline employment as a First Officer with one of Europe's top airlines! At the end of this phase, each student will hold a Multi-engine Commercial Pilot's License with an instrument rating, multi crew co-operation certificate and experience in handling a jet aircraft - a 'frozen Airline Transport License.' This will become 'unfrozen' as soon as each graduate has gained 1500 hours experience as a multi-engine, multi-crew pilot.
